#philosophy #biblestudy #Ecclesiastes “Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!” -Ecclesiastes 1:2 The book of Ecclesiastes addresses a philosophy we now call Existentialism. It’s not an overstatement to say Existentialism is the fastest growing form of Humanism, which is the fastest growing philosophy in the Western world. I believe an understanding of Existentialism and the book of Ecclesiastes hold the key to understanding such cultural trends as the transgender movement and “furries”. In a world devoid of reason, meaning and purpose, “why not?” becomes a license for rebellion against the Divine Logos, or Reason who really does give meaning to our existence. For existentialists, there is no divine plan or divine justice. Therefore, there is no concept of sin, nor a need for Christ to atone for our sins. It is simply up to each individual to determine our own moral code. After considering this philosophy throughout the book, what is the Teacher’s conclusion? “Fear God and keep His commands, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed to judgment including every hidden thing, whether it be good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.
